My daughter has loads of soft toys, but for some reason she doesn’t play with a teddy bear (although there are some in a basket in her room). My son on the other hand has a little soft white polar boar which he adores and has the imaginative name, ‘Bear’. If in doubt, you can always go with a famous teddy bear name and leave it at that. Here are some famous and classic names to choose from.

What are some tips for naming a teddy bear?
Here are some suggestions for coming up with a name for your teddy bear:
- Make sure the name is easy to pronounce. It’s probably best to keep the name short so it’s easier for your son or daughter to say the name.
- Look at the teddy bear’s appearance. Is it white, pink or brown? Is it fluffy? Is it small and cute? All these elements can help you come up with a name for your teddy bear.
- Focus on the teddy bear’s personality. This is how your son or daughter can help. Ask them about the teddy bear’s personality. Is he/she playful and a bit cheeky? Or is the teddy bear a bit shy and calm? Children will think about these things when they have a soft toy so focusing on these personality traits can definitely help inspire you to come with a great name.
- Be creative but don’t over think it. You can try and come up with a creative and unique name for a teddy bear, but at the end of the day sometimes simple is best. For example, “Snowy” is fine for a white bear.
Do teddy bears need a name?
Many children give their teddy bears a name as it makes them feel like they have a friend or personal companion, and it gives them a sense of ownership. A brief history of the teddy bear
While there are plenty of famous bears found in literature, cartoons and movies such as Winnie The Pooh, Paddington Bear and Yogi Bear, probably the most popular name for a teddy bear is “Teddy”, although I have no data to back this up. This name came about in reference to former US President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt. The story goes that he refused to shoot a bear on a hunting trip and consequently a political cartoon was made of the incident in The Washington Post. A certain Morris Michtom saw this cartoon and created a teddy bear and placed it in his candy shop, calling it “Teddy’s Bear”. They literally flew off the shelves as people bought so many of them and Michtom went on to found the Ideal Novelty and Toy Co.
How can you take care of a teddy bear?
Here are some tips for taking care of a teddy bear so it will last longer:
- Store it in a cool, dry place if your child isn’t really using it. You may also need to use some moth balls to protect it from pests.
- Remove dust from the teddy bear with a soft brush from time to time.
- Keep the teddy bear out of direct sunlight.
- Repair the teddy bear as soon as you spot signs of damage. If you see any rips or tears on the teddy bear, fix it as soon as you can. A child pulling and tugging on their favorite soft toy will quickly make things worse very quickly!
- Make sure you clean it from time to time. You may be able to spot clean with a bit of detergent/soap and a damp cloth. Try not to use a lot of water and avoid putting teddy bears in the washing machine (would you like to be spun around multiple times per second for a long time?)
