Cleaning a high chair tray can quickly become a daily chore when you have a messy baby throwing food everywhere except in their mouth! High chair trays attract bits of food, spilt liquid and other stains very easily, so you have to always wipe it down after every meal.
However, to make things a little easier some high chair trays can be placed in the dishwasher. Obviously it wouldn’t make sense to do this after every meal as that would be a bit over the top, but for an occasional deep clean, it can be a sensible solution. So are high chair trays safe to use in the dishwasher? Let’s look at this in more detail, as it can vary by manufacturer.
How can you clean a high chair tray?
If you want to clean the high chair tray by hand, just wipe down underneath and on top of the tray after every use. For a deeper clean, which you might want to do once a week or so, it’s probably best to remove the tray and let it soak in some warm and soapy water. This will help shift any stubborn food stains. If your kitchen sink is big enough that’s ideal, but if not, you can place it in the bath tub. After soaking the tray for a while, you should be able to scrub off any food stains fairly easily. Rinse afterwards and let the tray air dry before you reattach it to the high chair.
If you want to use your dishwasher to clean the high chair tray, check the manufacturer guidelines first. If everything looks ok, see if there is any further information about what temperature setting you should use as you don’t want the tray to warp or lose its shape.
Is it better to use a dishwasher or do it by hand?
If you can put the high chair tray in the dishwasher from time to time, it is worth doing as it will give it a deep clean and sanitize everything. Just make sure you check the instructions carefully though as some high chair trays might not be compatible with a dishwasher. If you want to it by hand, make sure you occasionally use some washing up liquid and warm water to give it a deeper clean, and rinse everything afterwards.
How often should you clean your high chair tray?
You should clean the baby high chair after every meal. This might be as simple as a quick wipe down and sweeping up any crumbs and bits of food. However, for a more thorough clean, you should aim to do this at least once a week using a dishwasher or putting the tray in to soak and scrubbing off any stains.
